Make the Most of Your Journey

Somewhere along the way, society taught us to believe that life is a bed of roses. But the truth is life can be quite a stinker. The following tips will help you make the most of your journey.

Don’t be saccharin

As sweet as saccharin is, it leaves behind a bitter aftertaste. Don’t saccharin coat your life, paint on an artificial smile and pretend life is sugary sweet. The playacting may leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth. Be real as you deal with the challenges of life. If someone asks how you’re doing, don’t be afraid to tell them you’ve had better days, but you’re pressing on toward a sunnier tomorrow. Being real doesn’t mean you must be a pessimist; it simply means you acknowledge the challenges as you work through them.

Upgrade your existence

Jack London once said, “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.” Embrace each moment, rather than wallowing in misery. That may mean taking time for a deep breath or making plans for the future, no matter how uncertain tomorrow may be.

Bestir thyself

Sitting around moping never brought sunshine into anyone’s life. Get up and move. Take a short walk and get some fresh air. If your physical situation won’t allow movement, take time to exercise your brain. A round of Sudoku or a crossword puzzle will stimulate brain activity and maybe even release a few mood-boosting endorphins.

Life is not always a walk in the park, but facing your challenges realistically, embracing each moment and taking time out for physical or mental exercise can elevate mood and help you make the most of your life’s journey.
