Climbing the Corporate Ladder in High Heels

If you’re a woman who wishes to get ahead in business, you can do so without wearing high heels. It doesn’t hurt to dress like an executive as you climb the corporate ladder, however. Appearances count for much, especially for females who strive toward excellence in a world largely dominated by men. Here are a few more tips to you’ll want to know about:

Make your boss look good

Even if you aspire to someday take their position within the company, now is the time to help your superiors shine. Never insult a boss in front of co-workers, and be sure to praise their achievements in front of their superiors. Surpass expectations and volunteer for extra-office activities when you can.

Learn to play golf

It may sound like a silly idea, but you’d be surprised how many business meetings -and promotions- are made on the links. Take golf lessons on the weekends and practice, practice, practice.

Join industry associations and the chamber of commerce, too

Networking with peers who work in the same field provides a perfect opportunity to hear about job openings and get insider scoop on upcoming promotions. Establish a good reputation for yourself, and be sure to share contact info with anyone who might assist you on your way up the corporate ladder.

Get a mentor

Ask another female who works in an advanced position at your company, and ask if they’d kindly offer their advice. Ask what worked for them and don’t forget to listen to their stories. You might avoid learning some business lessons the hard way.

In this day and age, it’s hard to believe that women comprise only a small percentage of CEOs in large corporations. Dress well, be sociable without revealing too much of your personal life, and you may climb the corporate ladder sooner than you expect.
